The South African Airways Pilots' Association (SAAPA) was founded in 1945 to represent the interests of the pilots of South African Airways. Today the association has 820 Members who are active airline pilots working for South African Airways. SAAPA is headed by an elected Chairman and an Executive Committee, who are full time pilots. In 1993 SAAPA was transformed into a national association, the Airline Pilots' Association of South Africa (ALPA-SA) and SAAPA became a branch of the national association. ALPA-SA represents all airline pilots in South Africa and is affiliated to IFALPA (International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations). The federation develops and consistently updates an international pilot's viewpoint on all matters impacting upon the profession and affecting generally the safety of air transport operations. It achieves this through the work of a number of specialist committees comprised of active airline pilots. The association is housed at 3rd Floor Airways Park in Kempton Park.
